The New Puppets (commonly referred to as The Human Puppets) are puppet redesigns/versions of the Nintendo characters/plushies and the mascots for SML. They were first introduced in "The Human Potion!", and were designed both to resemble the design philosophy of the other human characters like Chef Pee Pee and Brooklyn T. Guy and to separate the characters from their Nintendo counterparts. The puppets are designed very similarly to puppets from Sunny Puppets. After being occasionally used in videos for more than a year, they are now the official trademark of the SML channel/franchise after owing to a Cease and Desist letter from Nintendo, as of 2021.

History[]

The First Puppet[]

While the present-day versions of the New Puppets did not exist until much later, a puppet recreation of a plush character did exist years prior. A puppet version of Bowser was featured as the main antagonist of "The Perfect Plan!" in 2015.

While Logan made Bowser a puppet by turning a normal plush of his character into a puppet, it is not officially credited as one of the new puppets as it did not actually transform him into a human. Logan also tried to make the Junior plush into a puppet; it turned out poorly, with Logan describing the result as "scary."

Creation and Initial Controversy[]

In the wake of new COPPA guidelines penalizing Youtubers for using kid friendly characters for mature content, Logan and his crew created the new puppets, partially as an experiment and mostly as a way to circumvent COPPA. While the puppets weren't officially revealed to the public until late 2019, an early version of Junior's puppet can be seen in the plush closet in a Chilly vlog from July 2019, suggesting the crew had the idea for the puppets much earlier than commonly thought, seemingly even before the channel switch to SuperBowserLogan.[1]

The Human Potion

The puppets were formally revealed in the video "The Human Potion!", which featured the first four created puppets, Bowser Junior, Cody, Joseph and Bowser transforming into their new forms via a potion, with Logan announcing Mario and Black Yoshi to be getting their own puppets soon after.[2] At first, Logan intended the change to be permanent; however, fan reception to the puppets was mixed to negative as noted in a vlog on Chilly's channel, which prompted Logan to switch back and forth between the plushes and puppets to see if "fans would warm up to them".[3] Videos would alternate between using plushies and puppets for the remainder of 2019, but by the start of 2020, Logan seemingly settled on keeping the plushies.

While a few new puppets were produced for sale on the SML Merch website, them being Mario, Rosalina and Bully Bill, and they were given promotional tie-in videos ("Jeffy's New Dad!" for Mario's puppet and "Jeffy's New Friend!" for Rosalina and Bully's), the puppets otherwise went unused, with the sole exception of "Hunky Cody!" owing to it's plot being unfeasible with the limitations of the plushies.

In February 2021, Logan received a C&D letter from Nintendo prohibiting him from uploading further content with Nintendo properties owing to his raunchy portrayal of their characters; as a consequence of this, the crew made the decision to permanently switch to using the new puppets for videos and changing the channel/series branding to reflect it.

Many further major changes came to the series from the switch; in addition to the designs, Logan also decided to change the names of most of the puppeted characters to further distinguish them from their Nintendo counterparts, and the "SML Remakes" series was rebooted in March 2021 with the intention of preserving the channel's plush history. The name changes were introduced in the first remake, "Jeffy!", with Mario being renamed "Marvin" and Rosalina being renamed "Rose", with the names being presented as faked. While the series briefly switched between using the original names and the renames, it fully settled on the renames from "Jeffy's Whistle!" onwards.

Production on new puppets has resumed since the C&D, including further new puppets, such as Toad, whose puppet debuted in the remake of "Cool Cody" and Black Yoshi, whose puppet debuted after multiple delays in "It's Ya Boy Duggie!". Starting with the Blue M&M's Officer in "The Mustache Problem!", non-Nintendo owned characters have also been given New Puppets for the stated purpose of allowing Logan complete ownership over his characters; further non-Nintendo puppets are slated for the future for characters like Woody, Shrek, and Tony The Tiger.

Trivia[]

  • "The Life Of Brooklyn Guy!", as well as presumably almost all post-C&D videos were originally going to be normal plush videos before turning into new puppet videos. The former became a new puppet video due to the use of cursing at a time where Logan was concerned with COPPA.
  • Cody's puppet is the first human puppet to gain an alternate design, with his hair added all over his head and his body being a 6 pack with a tie over it.
  • Logan confirmed on the official SML Discord server that Luigi and Peach will be brought back.
  • The Chief is the first non-Nintendo character to get a human puppet.
  • Black Yoshi/Duggie is by far the longest gap between puppet announcement and video usage; his puppet was first mentioned in November 2019[2], but it wasn't used in a video until August 2022, almost three years later.
  • Chef Pee Pee, Hansel and The Alien are the only puppets that do not replace the original puppets in the videos. Though a couple of them were used as a costume and a newer character.
  • It is unknown if the other Nintendo characters (Daisy, Yoshi, Toadette, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong, Wario, Waluigi, Diddy Kong, etc.) are going to get New Puppet designs. The same goes for other characters like Tony the Tiger and Mr Pig.
  • There are also a couple of puppets leaked on places like Instagram with currently unverified identities; one of them can be seen in the gallery below. It is commonly speculated to be an early design for Black Yoshi on account of insiders in Logan's inner circle describing it as such and Logan stating that Black Yoshi was originally going to be a human.
